NAR HPMK® thermal blanket for hypothermia prevention and management
The NAR Hypothermia Prevention and Management Kit (HPMK®) is a professional kit designed to prevent hypothermia and maintain the body heat of an injured person. It is used by military medics, rescuers, and emergency services. The kit is recommended by the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (CoTCCC) as a tool for preventing hypothermia during care of injured individuals.
Hypothermia prevention is a mandatory stage of the MARCH algorithm. Even in warm weather, severe trauma and blood loss can lead to a rapid drop in body temperature, which worsens blood clotting and increases the risk of complications. That is why the NAR HPMK kit is widely used during evacuation of injured persons, rescue operations, and the work of emergency medical teams.
Features of the NAR HPMK® thermal blanket
The kit is specifically designed to maintain normal body temperature for an extended period. Unlike standard thermal blankets, the NAR HPMK combines a multi-layer insulating shell and a self-heating insert that is activated by oxygen and does not require an external power source.
This CoTCCC-recommended solution for hypothermia prevention combines high efficiency, compactness, and ease of use. The design ensures maximum heat retention even during transportation of the injured person or work in adverse weather conditions.
Main advantages of the kit include:
- recommended by CoTCCC for tactical medicine;
- provides up to 10 hours of continuous dry heat;
- oxygen-activated self-heating insert;
- does not require electricity;
- four-layer HRS™ insulating shell;
- protection from rain, wind, and cold;
- tapered shape for maximum heat retention;
- integrated hood;
- 360° access to the injured person using full-length closures;
- reinforced construction tested for loads over 250 lbs (113 kg);
- compact vacuum packaging.
These characteristics allow the kit to be used even in the most challenging field conditions. After opening, it quickly deploys and provides effective protection against further heat loss without the use of any additional energy sources.
How the HPMK® system works
The kit is based on the patented Hypothermia Prevention and Management Kit (HPMK®) system. It consists of an HRS™ insulating shell and a special self-heating insert. Upon contact with oxygen, the heating element automatically begins to generate heat, maintaining a comfortable temperature for approximately ten hours.
The outer shell is made of four-layer composite material with a protected heat-reflective layer. Inside, there is an integrated fluid-absorbing pad, and the built-in hood helps reduce heat loss from the head. Continuous hook-and-loop closures around the entire perimeter allow quick access to any part of the body without fully opening the blanket.
Design features include:
- HRS™ technology with four-layer insulation;
- heat-reflective non-conductive layer;
- self-heating insert;
- integrated hood;
- fluid-absorbing pad;
- full-perimeter hook-and-loop closures;
- tapered shape for better heat retention;
- NAR Red Tip Technology® for quick opening of the packaging.
This design significantly reduces heat loss even during prolonged evacuation. At the same time, medics can perform necessary procedures without completely removing the protective shell.
Technical characteristics
The kit is supplied in vacuum packaging that takes up minimal space in a medical backpack or vehicle first aid kit. All components are ready for use immediately after opening. This format ensures long-term storage and protects the product from moisture and mechanical damage.
The kit includes:
- HRS™ heat-retaining shell with integrated hood;
- self-heating insert;
- vacuum protective packaging.
Main characteristics:
- recommended by CoTCCC;
- heating duration up to 10 hours;
- heat source – oxygen-activated self-heating insert;
- shell material – four-layer composite fabric;
- load capacity – over 250 lbs (113 kg);
- shell size – 198 × 109 cm;
- kit weight – approximately 1.6 kg;
- compact vacuum packaging.
The kit does not require batteries, electricity, or additional heating elements. That is why it is widely used during long evacuations and operations in автономous conditions.
Where is the NAR HPMK® used?
The kit is designed for situations where there is a risk of hypothermia after injury. NAR HPMK is recommended for use in:
- medic kits;
- medical backpacks;
- evacuation kits;
- emergency service vehicles;
- search and rescue operations;
- emergency kits;
- expeditions and long travel маршрути;
- work in cold climates;
- civil protection services.
The presence of such a kit significantly improves the level of care for injured individuals with severe trauma. It is especially recommended for use together with tourniquets, hemostatic bandages, compression bandages, chest seals, and other tools used according to the MARCH algorithm.
